Truth is I’ve been holding off on this review because I haven’t been able to find any ammo. 7.7x58mm is about as rare as cheap 22 LR so it will take a while to find out. So how does she shoot? I wish I could say. The floor plate is hinged and can be opened by depressing a latch inside the trigger guard in front of the trigger.

The bolt can be released by bringing it to the rear, and then pulling the bolt stop located on the left side of the receiver. When the groove is facing straight up, the action is safe. There is a generous groove cut into the knurled portion.

Push in and rotate clockwise to engage, reverse to disengage. The rear knurled portion acts as a safety when the hammer is cocked. The action of the rifle, a modified Mauser design, uses a horizontal bolt that rotates 90 degrees to cycle. Absent from my rifle are the fold out sight “wings,” intended to be used for leading shots against aircraft. The rear sight also features the ability to flip up and has graduated markings for longer distance shots. The Type 99 is the exception and target acquisition feels more like an AR-15 than anything else. One thing most surplus guns have in common is less than stellar sighting systems. Looking through the sights, I was pleasantly surprised to see a peep rear with a pointed blade front. It feels more like a youth model than a battle rifle, but it was made to fit the shorter stature of Japanese troops at the time. Like most Japanese rifles of the period, American shooters will find the Type 99 a little odd to shoulder.

Given that series runs by each arsenal were in the neighborhood of 100,000 units, I think its safe to say my rifle was made in the early months of 1941, given its low four digit serial number. As far as I can tell, mine is a series 20, which would place production from early 1941 to early 1942.

The symbol to the left of the serial number designates the particular series, or generation of the Type 99. After a little poking around on the interwebs I was able to guestimate my rifle was made by the Kokura Arsenal. On the left side of the receiver there is a Japanese symbol, followed by a serial number, and then another symbol. The symbols for “Type 99” (read right to left) are prominently displayed under where the “mum” used to be. My rifle is void of the Chrysanthemum, undoubtedly ground off by the Japanese to save face. I was lucky enough to inherit an Arisaka Type 99 chambered in 7.7x58mm. My particular rifle is one such souvenir. Those rifles came straight out of Japan as war souvenirs, and later, as surplus guns. Shortly after WWII, one such surplus rifle was common in the marketplace, or so I read. The lesser known, the use to be, the has been. Belgian Mausers, definitely on my wish list, are inching up in price but nice examples can still get you in the game for under $400.īut then there are the other rifles. Enfields are still floating around, albeit much pricier than in years past.

Yugoslavian Mausers can still be had for under $300 if you don’t mind a less than perfect bore. But Mosins have not always been the only game in town. Most nations gravitated towards automatic actions since WWII and I can’t foresee a surplus of cheap long guns in the near future. As far as bolt actions go, I’m afraid we might have reached the end. With the surplus market for Mosin Nagants drying up somewhat a lot may be wondering what the next surplus long gun will be.
